A leak arrived earlier this morning and suggests that the Battlefield franchise will take gamers back to World War II with its next installment. The franchise saw a serious resurgence in popularity with last year’s Battlefield 1 and, if the leak is to be believed, the follow up game will be titled Battlefield V.

The title hasn’t been confirmed by Electronic Arts yet, but it is plastered very clearly on the test build that was shared in this morning’s leak. The title seems to suggest that EA is returning Battlefield to the numbered naming structure that was last used in 2013.

There’s obviously the chance that Battlefield V is just a working title, but if that was the case, it seems unlikely that it would have been worked into the build’s title menu. The most recent numbered installment in the game was 2013’s Battlefield 4, assuming that the 1 in Battlefield 1 refers to World War I and not a series reboot. That would mean that Battlefield V is a logical title for the next installment… Though Battlefield 2 might have made for a more smooth transition for the many new players.

It seems likely that EA was probably saving this reveal for E3 2018, but it’s possible that the leak could lead the team to reconsider its timeline. So far there has been no official comment on the leaked content or the title, but we’ll post an update as soon as EA has something official to say.

Check back for updates as the story develops.

The next Battlefield game has yet to be officially announced.
