With regular sports still suspended due to COVID, Nevada has approved more online betting for CS:GO’s Rio Major.
Let’s say you’re a sports better. What do you do when there’s no football, hockey, soccer, baseball, or basketball games to bet on thanks to a global pandemic? You turn to esports, of course.
Since you can play Counter-Strike from home, there’s nothing stopping an enterprising sports gambler from finding their gambling fix through video games. In order to get out in front of the new wave, the Nevada Gaming Control Board has once again granted an exemption to allow sports betters to take bets on the ESL One Rio tournament.
Originally scheduled to take place in May, ESL delayed the CS:GO Major Championship to November and increased its prize pool to $2 million. Players are already training for this enormous prize pool, and sports betters have been begging the NGCB to let them take bets on the only game in town.
The approval will allow for three types of bets: head to head, match winner, and overall winner. The NGCB will allow other types of bets only by special application. In-play betting options are not allowed, so all bets must be finalized before the match begins. This follows similar moves made for Call of Duty, LoL, Dota 2 esports events.
