Fans of both The Witcher books and video games enjoyed the Netflix series’ first season for the most part, but some might have hoped it would have dropped a few more hints towards the critically acclaimed gaming series. Now, it sounds like future seasons are going to contain many more hints towards the video games, as showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich promises that it’ll happen, “as often as possible.”

Season 1 of The Witcher gave us a handful of hints towards the games, but other than the fan favorite bathtub scene, many of them might have flown over the heads of those who aren’t hardcore fans. In the future, the show will look to add references that casual fans are more likely to pick up on.

Hissrich explained that the show’s main focus is adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, and that they didn’t want to create, “an adaptation of an adaptation.” That being said, the team recognizes that a large portion of the show’s audience only knows The Witcher from playing the games and not necessarily from reading the books.

The showrunner included the idea that she’d like to add more references from the games in order to pay homage to the team at CD Projekt Red. Hissrich mentions that she’s visited the developer, met many of the people that have worked on the games, and that she admires the incredible work that they do.

Hissrich also explained that many of the people working on the show have played the games themselves, so it only makes sense that they’d want to pay the series further homage. The actor behind Geralt himself, Henry Cavill, famously stated that even he has played through The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt almost three separate times.

The Witcher 3 is hands down the most popular entry in the series, so when those references do pop up in Season 2, they will likely hint towards the third game more often than not. There will without a doubt be a few references towards the first two games as well though, providing an extra layer of fan service for those who have played through them.

So while The Witcher’s television adaptation is in fact based on a book series that also inspired the games, Season 2 will look to add more direct references to those games. It’s unclear when and where those references will take place, but here’s hoping that we’ll finally see a round of Gwent played when Season 2 launches next year.
