We are in the midst of Netflix’s Geeked Week, which is bringing tons of announcements for new and upcoming shows on the streaming platform. Today, Netflix starts us off with a trailer for the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway feature-length movie.
The sequel to the original Gundam series, Gundam Hathaway takes place 12 years after the Second Neo Zeon War. The Earth Federation has accepted the Republic of Zeon back into its ranks, but this hasn’t led to an entirely peaceful integration. Distrust, greed, and political unrest leads the Federation to begin deporting undesirable civilians to the outer colonies, leading to the rise of a terrorist organization called Mafty.
Mafty is led by Bright Noah’s son, Hathaway Noah, who takes up arms against the Federation in a new prototype Gundam suit.
Gundam Hathaway was originally set for a 2020 theatrical release in Japan, but the pandemic led to multiple delays. Now the film will debut tomorrow along with Blu-Ray sales, but there’s no word on a simultaneous Netflix broadcast. All we know is that Gundam Hathaway will start streaming “soon.”
Hathaway isn’t the only Gundam project Netflix has on the go. A live-action movie from Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is on its way, although that too has no release date at current.
Cowboy Bebop, on the other hand, has a release window sometime this fall. John Cho takes the role of bounty hunter Spike Spiegel, while Daniella Pineda plays Faye Valentine and Mustafa Shakir plays Jet Black. The show will even have new music from original anime composer Yoko Kanno.
Expect more announcements as Netflix’s Geeked Week continues.
