The creators of Netflix’s The Dragon Prince, Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, confirmed via a Comic-Con@Home panel that the animated show has been picked up for 4 more seasons. The extended renewal allows them to fully realize their planned 7-season story.
During a Q&A session at the Zoom into Xadia panel as part of Comic-Con@Home, Ehasz saved the happy news for the last question. He surprised the assembled cast members with the announcement that “Netflix has picked up the whole saga of The Dragon Prince," news that fans will no doubt welcome after season 3 ended on a cliffhanger.
For those who’ve yet to watch the show, The Dragon Prince is an animated fantasy series set in the land of Xadia where half-brothers, Ezran and Callum, along with their elf assassin companion Rayla, journey to return the Dragon King’s egg to its mother, hopefully averting a potential war between humans and elves. Aaron Ehasz was previously head writer of fan favorite show Avatar: The Last Airbender and Jack De Sena, voice of Sokka in Avatar, plays the role of Callum.
Aaron Ehasz spoke about his plans for the saga in an interview with CBR: “there’s six primal sources plus dark, so seven [seasons], that’s what our plan is now”, referring to the show’s naming convention for each season. Each season is named after the primal forces of Sun, Moon, Stars, Earth, Sky, and Ocean with season 1 being ‘Moon’, season 2 ‘Sky’ and season 3 ‘Sun’. No word on what season 4 will be named but it’s expected that the final season will be ‘Darkness’.
Though there’s been no announcement of a potential release date just yet, The Dragon Prince fans won’t have to wait too long to dive back into the world of Xadia. The Art of the Dragon Prince is due for release on Aug. 20 with almost 200 pages of production sketches and concept art for the first three seasons. An original graphic novel, Through the Moon, is planned for release on Oct. 6, and an online multiplayer game from Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond’s production company Wonderstorm is currently in development.
However, Aaron Ehasz has been accused of fostering a toxic and misogynistic work environment by two former Wonderstorm employees and a former co-worker from Riot Games, where he served as creative director. A report by Kotaku in 2018 detailed Riot Games’ hostile and sexist workplace culture, leading to a class-action suit which could potentially cost Riot Games $400 million in back pay owed to former women employees.
The Dragon Prince Seasons 1-3 are currently available on Netflix
UPDATE: A previous version of this post incorrectly claimed that Aaron Ehasz had been named in a lawsuit involving Riot Games. We apologize for the error.
