Update 3/25: It appears Netflix services have been restored. Original story follows.
Netflix appears to be having widespread server issues in the United States. According to Downdetector, the Netflix issues started earlier this morning, with a spike in outage reports occurring within the past hour.
At the time of this writing, it’s unclear just how many Netflix users are impacted by the outage. It doesn’t appear to be literally every Netflix user, but the issues are still widespread. Netflix itself has yet to release a statement on the issue, so it’s hard to say exactly how long this server outage will last.
In the meantime, it will be interesting to learn exactly why this Netflix server outage has happened and if it has anything to do with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Millions of people are currently self-isolating in their homes to avoid spreading the virus, and it’s possible that this is creating newfound strain on Netflix’s servers. Of course, the problem could be completely unrelated to the coronavirus as well, so Netflix users should keep that in mind.
It’s rare for users to get an explanation when an online service goes down. When Xbox Live went down multiple times this past month, Microsoft didn’t explain why it happened, for example. Considering this, it’s unlikely that Netflix will let its users now the exact cause of the problem.
We will update this post when the Netflix servers are confirmed to be restored for all users.
