Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that NEO: The World Ends With You will be a sequel to the official anime that is due to be released in April.
According to a translation provided by KHInsider, the series producer of TWEWY took over the anime’s official Twitter account in order to provide an update for fans. He said that the game will be a sequel to the anime and that the mask of the new character Rindo will become a part of the normal world. He also included a wonderful piece of artwork that shows Neku and Rindo together, spiky hair and all.
What makes this piece of news intriguing is that NEO: The World Ends With You seems as if it isn’t following the game’s initial storyline, which begs the question: is this a new game set in a completely different timeline? Perhaps it’s a way for two separate canons to exist at the same time. With the next entry of the Kingdom Hearts series taking place in Shibuya and the tease in Dream Drop Distance of Neku meeting Sora again, perhaps that will act as a pseudo-sequel to the DS game. We wouldn’t put it past Nomura, especially given that he seems to be including his cancelled project Versus XIII in the mix as well. Should we call this the Nomuraverse?
Regardless of continuity, NEO: The World Ends With You looks like an incredible sequel from the trailer that’s been released. It has completely shifted to 3D combat while retaining that bright and funky art style. The core mechanics still seem to be intact, so fans of the original game should be happy. We also have a returning character joining main protagonist Rindo on his adventure: Sho Minamimoto.
Just like the original game, our hero will be following missions in order to survive the “Reaper’s Game.” If he doesn’t finish his tasks on time, he will perish. As the character, you’ll explore the streets of Tokyo as you try to figure out the mysteries of the Game they were forced to join.
NEO: The World Ends With is due to launch for Nintendo Switch and PS4 in 2021. We’re expecting full compatibility with the PS5 as well.
