The Soulslike experience that looks to blend powerful armor with supernatural abilities has finally shed its release date in a frightening and action-packed new trailer. On August 18, prepare to find new meaning to player cosmetics in the ultra-hard, fast-paced, and ebon-dark Mortal Shell.
Although it may look and feel akin to any FromSoftrware experience, Mortal Shell takes intricate steps to maintain its own gameplay mechanics far apart from what fans of Dark Souls and Bloodborne have come to know and adore. Take, for instance, the newly introduced Ballistazooka shown in all of its tantalizing glory amid the recent trailer. It’s a testament to how far Cold Symmetry is planning to go in bridging this gap between the now-cliché Soulsborne tagline.
Still, the ingredients are there, as the four co-founders of Cold Symmetry relate in utter excitement:
With well over 350,000 beta players, it’s hard not to imagine the ever-burgeoning success of this game and, hopefully, an ever-evolving franchise. Exploring new shells, even more difficult (and monstrous) foes, not to mention opening wide a world of impenetrable doom, Mortal Shell is no sooner bound for immediate success upon its debut.
“Our commitment to our fans is to create a soulslike game that is authentic, uncompromising and unrelenting. We are humbled by the popularity of the beta and we closely studied the feedback we received to create something that we are incredibly proud of.”
It’s not all darkness and gloom in Mortal Shell, though, as evidenced by the over 150,000 players who petted the cat amid that same beta. The trailer likewise proves this, with a moment of reprieve for the character, in addition to numerous rounds of intense combat that will challenge the player in unearthing and utilizing various shells across multiple scenarios. It’s certainly an interesting take on the Soulslike genre, yet all with its own natural spin of originality and imagination.
And, for only the low cost of $30, it will be hard to pass up this legend in the making, even if its several times harder than anything that comes before it. Time to start testing shells, as that August 18 release date draws near. Mortal Shell will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store, with a Steam version planned for a 2021 release.
