Mortal Shell has moved to an open beta thanks to the overwhelming demand for preview access.
Last month, we said that Cold Symmetry would be hosting a closed beta test for their upcoming Souls-like RPG, Mortal Shell. Well, it turns out that there were so many people clamoring for beta access codes that the developers decided that it was too much of a hassle to have a closed beta and instead just decided to open things up to everyone over the weekend.
“We expected demand but nothing like this,” wrote Cold Symmetry on Twitter. “We really didn’t want so many people to feel left out. We’re delighted to open the beta for everyone on PC, starting now.”
So instead of a closed beta from July 3 to July 10, we now have an open beta. You can download the beta demo on the Epic Games Store now, and you can pre-order the game for just $30 if you like what you see. Note that this is still just a beta test and that things might be a little rough around the edges.
The beta should follow roughly the same path as shown in the 10-minute gameplay trailer that was released a few weeks ago, with the player given access to Mortal Shell’s opening sequence and ending with a nice boss fight. You’ll have access to two “shells,” which is the way Mortal Shell handles its class system, and of course, there will be plenty of enemies to memorize their attack patterns as you plod your way forward.
Good players should expect to get about an hour of gameplay out of the beta, while the rest of us might get between 2 to 3 hours of gameplay. There shouldn’t be much in terms of story spoilers, so feel free to explore as much as you dare. Just know that there are plenty of areas that are still inaccessible thanks to the unfinished nature of this beta test.
We still don’t have a release date for Mortal Shell, but we know it’ll be sometime in Q3 2020 on the Epic Games Store as a timed exclusive. You’ll have to wait until Q3 2021 to get the game on Steam.
