Last weekend, Mortal Shell took center stage at the PCGaming Show with a brand new gameplay trailer showing off the game’s extremely Soulslike action. Those unable to wait for the return of the Demon’s Souls remake might do well to look at Mortal Shell to get their fix, as this game has Dark Souls written all over it.
Along with the new trailer, Mortal Shell received a much longer gameplay livestream courtesy of Fextralife where we got to see some of the game’s more intrinsic mechanics. For example, the player character (who appears as a sort of horrifying blank slate) has the ability to possess dead warriors and use their corpses to augment their skills. In the case of the new trailer, we get to see what the shell Tiel can do.
Of Mortal Shell’s four playable shells, Tiel is the rogue of the group. He possesses great agility and the ability to disappear into smoke in order to dodge enemies’ attacks. Tiel is also a mastery of poison and can augment his weapons with venomous powers.
The other big showcase of the gameplay reveal is the weapon Martyr’s Blade, which appears to be an enormous sword possessing great reach and power at the cost of leaving the player vulnerable to counter-attack. Each swing can take many moments to complete and missing your target can prove a costly mistake.
And along with the gameplay, we got more details on Mortal Shell’s release. We still don’t have a specific date (other than later in 2020), but we do know that the game will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Game’s Store as a timed exclusive. Steam will have to wait until Q3 2021 before Mortal Shell arrives there. Price is $29.99, with pre-orders now live.
“The primary goals of our studio are to make Mortal Shell the best game it can be and to live another day and keep making awesome games in the future,” developer Cold Symmetry said, aware that Epic is still a sore spot for PC gamers. “Epic’s financial support, for a small studio like ours, was clearly going to help us achieve those goals so it was something we had to consider earnestly.”
Mortal Shell’s closed beta begins on July 3 and will run for one week. Head to the game’s Discord channel for your chance to get in on the action early.
