The recent Mortal Kombat movie released to a polarizing reception. Some think it is one of the finer movie adaptations of a video game, while others found it wholly disappointing. Those in the latter category still have the original 1995 movie to enjoy.

With these two movies’ existences, the next several years of the MK fandom will see people arguing to the ends of the earth about which film is better. The memes below reflect this. Some of them directly compare the old film to the new one, while others poke fun at either the classic or the new release.

9 He Was The Best Part Of The Movie

Even those who did not like the new film have to admit that Josh Lawson’s portrayal of Kano was pure gold. If he does not come back in a sequel — which seems unlikely even if a second film happens — we hope he stars in more films. His comedic prowess heightens the film and the story only really picks up once he is introduced. Kano also gets some nice fights.

8 They Are Both Worthy Liu Kangs

Fans of the old movie might have a hard time seeing anybody else in the Liu Kang role other than Robin Shou. He excellently embodies the character. All the same, Ludi Lin does a great job of portraying the legendary character. His sweep kick bit with Kano was a comedic highlight. We just wish we could have seen more of him. Ludi Lin previously acted in big budget films like Power Rangers and Aquaman.

7 Kano’s Relationship Advice

Kano really knows how to woo a woman. The only woman he could not win over was Sonya Blade, as evidenced by his fight with her in both Mortal Kombat films. In the 1995 movie Sonya breaks his neck, and in the new film he takes a gnome through the eye.

Trevor Goddard’s performance is the reason why Kano is Australian. As great as his performance is, Josh Lawson carries the torch wonderfully and makes the character his own.

6 Must Be A Deleted Scene

Of course, this is not actually scene from the new Mortal Kombat. Your eyes are not deceiving you though, Robin Shou is side by side with Chris Farley here. The picture is from Beverly Hills Ninja, the last movie Chris Farley released in his lifetime. The movie was critically panned for the most part. It is a shame Robin Shou did not become more popular after Mortal Kombat and this film. He definitely deserves to be.

5 Shang Tsung Vs. Shang Tsung

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa pulls off his most iconic performance as Shang Tsung in the 1995 film. Chin Han had some impossible shoes to fill in the 2021 movie. While his execution of the role is up to personal opinion, he should not take it personally if people prefer Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. Cary does such a good job, he ended up embodying the role several times more over the years, most notably in Mortal Kombat 11.

4 OK, But How Did He Learn That Phrase?

Scorpion yelling his iconic phrase was a great moment in the new movie. It raises an interesting question; how did Hanzo Hasashi learn this phrase? He speaks Japanese exclusively through the rest of the movie, even to Cole Young during the fight with Sub-Zero.

Did he pick some English in the the Netherrealm and decide on this as his catchphrase? His entrance into the fight was so cool, we are more than willing to forget this small logical misstep.

3 If Movies Were Cars

When comparing two things, it may be easier to express your feelings by bringing cars into the conversation. As this meme shows, the creator prefers the original 1995 movie to the new reboot. Feelings about the older film may come down to nostalgia. If you were a child in 1995, the first movie was all the rage. If you saw it for the first time as an adult, you might feel differently about it.

2 Actually, Maybe Not A Bad Idea

Imagine talking to somebody about the Mortal Kombat movie and hearing them say this. It reveals their knowledge, or lack thereof, of Mortal Kombat. However, it also sounds like a cool idea to bring Chun-Li into the MK universe. A crossover between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter would be a dream come true. The main problem would be dealing with violence. Capcom likely would not want their iconic roster getting torn to bits by the Mortal Kombat cast.

1 No Cat Is That Smart

Kano has some serious anger issues and does not like getting played. Cats similarly do not like it when their owners dupe them. However, no cat is ever smart is ever smart enough to realize when their owner is performing some trickery with a laser pointer. If they did somehow catch on, you should be ready for a wrath the likes of which the world has never seen. Cats are cute, but they are just as deadly as Kano. Some of them hate garden gnomes just as much, too.
