While everyone was enjoying Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons over the weekend, it seems WB Games was removing Mortal Kombat 9 from digital storefronts. Some users over on ResetEra noticed that the 2011 reboot of the gory fighting series went missing from Steam this weekend. In another weird twist, the PS3 version of the main game was delisted from the PSN, but the “Komplete Edition” remains for sale.

If that wasn’t enough, the PS3 servers for Mortal Kombat 9 have been shut down. That is according to the game’s own in-game messaging service, though some users are reporting otherwise. At any rate, it seems like something is up with Mortal Kombat and nobody knows what.

Many are guessing this delisting has to do with licensing agreements for the DLC fighter Freddy Krueger. Last year, the U.S. rights to the character reverted back to creator Wes Craven’s estate. With the contract on MK9 likely having finally run out, WB probably figured it was easier to just remove the game from sale than try to renegotiate a deal.

All of this is speculation, of course. We don’t actually know why Mortal Kombat 9 is gone. The game is no longer available on the Xbox Live Marketplace, but Freddy can be purchased individually. This is a really odd case of conflicting reports and no official word leading users to guess.

It seems unlikely that NetherRealm would be gearing up for a new port or Mortal Kombat 9. With 11 being its latest title and getting healthy support from tournament communities, there isn’t much reason to revisit the past. Fans love the game for its abundant fan service, but each new installment has improved on the title in numerous ways.

At the same time, this really sucks for preservation’s sake. Physical copies exist on PS3 and Xbox 360, but PC users’ only choice was via Steam. With the game now gone from existence, they are SOL. All hail the digital future, I suppose.

We’re bound to hear something from WB Games soon, especially with fans making a stink about this. Some advanced notice would have been greatly appreciated in this instance.
