Needless to say, the Kommunity Reveal event for Mortal Kombat 11 was a hit. Not only did it offer plenty of information about previously revealed content, but also it teased a lot more coming to the game, too. For instance, the gameplay reveal event unveiled the Custom Gear System, and it was also recently discussed by NetherRealm Studios’ Advanced Designer Paulo Garcia in an interview, which led to him also talking about secret characters being a part of the game.

For the uninitiated, a secret character is one not detailed in the set line-up of a battle plan, but is instead one that requires the player to meet certain conditions to unlock and fight. The MK series was the first fighting game franchise to include secret characters, a tradition that is confirmed to carry over in Mortal Kombat 11.

A perfect example of a secret character is Reptile. While he is a more of a reptilian fighter now, he first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat as a secret humanoid character with a fuse palette consisting of both Scorpion and Sub-Zero. He was added to the official fighting roster in Mortal Kombat 2, and over time, his appearance has changed into the more reptilian-like figure rumored to appear in Mortal Kombat 11.

Regarding the secret characters in Mortal Kombat 11, it remains to be seen how they will work. In the interview, Garcia simply stated, “There will be secret characters, sure.” But the addition of secret characters may cement MK11 as one of the most anticipated titles of 2019, for it’s safe to presume many Mortal Kombat veterans and newcomers alike will enjoy this feature.

While there may still be a few months before the identities of Mortal Kombat 11’s secret characters are revealed, fans will be able to get their hands on the beta before that. NetherRealm Studios has also confirmed the beta’s start date. And with the hype surrounding this game, it’s likely many are eagerly waiting to dive in.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches on April 23 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
