It is impossible to please everyone. And it is even harder to please people on every aspect of a game when said game is an incredibly successful one that has been on the market for over three decades. That is the case with Mortal Kombat. Love it or hate it, it is undeniable that Mortal Kombat is one of the most influential fighting games of our time.
Resurrected by a crazy time-travel storyline, Mortal Kombat reinvented itself and delivered a reimagination of its own characters with modernized gameplay and an alternative storyline to spice things out. And although most fans are pleased, there are also those who either dislike the newer games or some aspects of them. Mortal Kombat 10, for being the first Mortal Kombat in a long time that severely deviates from the original games, was targeted with several of those takes.
10 We Should Have Been Able To Play Motaro
Motaro is a centaur-like creature in Mortal Kombat that tormented any kid who had to fight him when he debuted in Mortal Kombat 3. He was never a playable character in the franchise, except for his two-legged appearance in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Powerful and huge as he is, he could have been a very fun character to play as.
This is exactly what Reddit user u/lookaboveyou thinks, four-legged Motaro should be playable. Although it quite hard to visualize it in a way that would seem fair, it would be quite fun anyway.
9 Fatalities Have Too Much Gore
Although it might seem quite weird to hear someone complaining about gore in Mortal Kombat, going through the post makes it gets easier to understand this opinion. Reddit user u/santh91 believes that there is not much creativity in Mortal Kombat 10’s fatalities.
The argument here is pretty simple. Creativity is always better than pure gore. In Mortal Kombat 10’s case, according to this Reddit user, there are Fatalities that were designed the other way around. Fortunately, Mortal Kombat 11 does not share the same issue and has crazy, creative fatalities.
8 X-Rays Don’t Need To Be So Brutal
Mortal Kombat 9 introduced the X-Rays attacks, which are over the top, violent attacks. They work as a substitute to Supers that are more prevalent in other fighting games. However, a human being would never survive any of those attacks, even in Mortal Kombat 10’s world. Some X-Ray Attacks show Kombatants having their eyes pierced, organs smashed, skull crushed, and so on.
This is most likely why Reddit user u/Kastelator thinks that X-Rays do not need to be so violent. Most of that hyper-violence would most likely be better in a fatality.
7 Mortal Kombat 10 Has Too Many Mortal Kombat 9 Characters
The characters in a fighting game will always be a tough choice for the developers. Repeating the character might cause the game to lack originality, but not adding a legacy character might cause the fanbase to feel alienated by the new game of a franchise.
This is most likely why there is always going to be someone who dislikes the amount of returning characters, such as Reddit user u/RandyCool. This is also why if RandyCool was happy about the characters in the game, there would certainly be people who’d not share his opinion.
6 Holding Back To Block Would Be Much Better
Mortal Kombat might not have been the first game to come up with a button to block but, in the fighting game community, it is the first game that comes to everyone’s mind when the mechanic is brought up in a conversation. Although it is a staple of the franchise, there are those who do not seem to ever get used to it.
Although some people might like the game, they can dislike certain aspects or mechanics of it. Reddit user u/afrophysicz is very passionate when expressing that his dislike for the block button in Mortal Kombat, and that is someone who loves the game.
5 Scorpion And Sub-Zero Are Boring
Scorpion and Sub-Zero are literally the two most popular and iconic characters of the whole Mortal Kombat franchise. They are possibly two of the most popular characters that originated from fighting games. Even those who never played a video game might know who the two are. Still, there are those who just do not like them and not even Scorpion’s coolest fatalities can change that.
That is certainly the case for Reddit user u/AnimatedRod, who is very clear to say that they find Sub-Zero and the Scorpion boring characters.
4 Cyborgs Should Not Be In Mortal Kombat
Many people like the cyborgs in Mortal Kombat. Lin-Kuei assassins with mechanical bodies that look like colored cyber Predators certainly are a cool concept for most of the fandom. However, most does not mean all. And as it is a constant with everything, that will always be those who dislike something popular.
Reddit user u/ElvisDEpressedly states that cyborgs should be purged from the canon. Although his opinion is not about the most popular characters of the series, purging a character from the canon seems a bit radical.
3 Overhead-Low Mix-Ups Should Not Lead Into Combos
Because it works with a defense button instead of a mechanic in which players hold back to block, Mortal Kombat has many Overhead-Low Mix-Ups. Mortal Kombat 10 is known for its frenetic gameplay and constant guessing that leads to high damaging combo. That might have taken some of the fun away for some players.
Since there are characters that can keep forcing players to stand up and crouch to correctly block certain strings or be caught by a combo, it is understandable that Reddit user u/dukmunky might like mix-ups in the game are overwhelming.
2 New Characters Should Replace Old Ninjas
Although the ninjas are the most popular Mortal Kombat Archetype, there are those who had enough of them. Smoke, Reptile, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Rain, Ermac, and Noob Saibot are by far some of the most celebrated characters in Mortal Kombat, and yet there are players who rather have them cut out from the game if it means new characters would be coming.
Reddit user u/Yahspetsnaz calls the ninjas Pallet Swap characters and he’d not mind if Ninjas would not make an appearance if that would mean new characters to show up. He got Takeda and plenty of new characters in Mortal Kombat 10, so maybe he is happy. Besides, there are many characters who have not returned yet.
1 Mortal Kombat 9 Was A Better Game
Mortal Kombat was brought back to life with Raiden’s time travel storyline in Mortal Kombat 9. For sure, fans owe a lot to that game, since they got to relive some of the moments that happened in the original games, but also because the game revived the franchise.
When Mortal Kombat 10 showed up, it received mixed reactions, but eventually grew to be one of the most beloved games of the franchise. Still, players like Reddit user u/Niggish believe that when compared to the previous game, Mortal Kombat 10 was a step back.
