Sub-Zero, a brawling ninja often portrayed as having ice powers, is one of the Mortal Kombat franchise’s most recognizable, iconic characters, and he owes that honor in no small part to his rough, ready-for-a-fight character design.
Because his design is so complex, and because he looks so unique compared to most video game characters, many cosplayers struggle with doing his character justice even with a good outfit or well-designed props. However, some (like the 10 in this list) have so much skill and talent that they make cosplaying as Sub-Zero look easy.
10 Ailathetigress
Cosplayer ailathetigress rocks this awesome Sub-Zero cosplay, adapting his signature outfit into something more glamorous - if economic - and posing alongside another cosplayer, Panterona Cosplay, who’s in a very similar Scorpion outfit.
Even minor design elements like the hair and props turned out really well, and the camera work, done by J.Hamilton Photography, captures and compliments the engaging atmosphere.
9 Redan Cosplay
Redan Cosplay totally nails Sub-Zero’s look in this cool cosplay; he carries himself like someone who doesn’t know the meaning of the word fear. The outfit is extremely clean-looking - it’s glossy and well-made, especially when it comes to the mask (which was designed by robo.guerriro) and it captures the spirit of the character without overloading on detail.
The aesthetic elements are pretty on-the-nose as well, like the surprisingly good visual effects and the well-composed photography (done by the skilled gigaxis).
8 Slav.cosplay
Slav.Cosplay definitely doesn’t look like someone to be trifled with in this hard-core take on Sub-Zero. Her ready-to-fight pose is great, and her - almost threatening - gaze is honestly chilling. Her costume is pretty advanced as well.
Her hair literally just looks like a longer version of the character’s, and the photography (done by Denzil) makes her look even cooler with professional framing and composition.
7 JayCee Cosplay
JayCee Cosplay rules this shockingly good Sub-Zero cosplay with confidence and style. Her costume looks epic; it’s extremely detailed, and little details like Sub-Zero’s famous scar and the glossy mask design show a lot of work went into preserving the feel of the original games.
The photography (done by Studio 95 Photographix) works wonders, and the visual effects are very well done - the very modern aesthetic, complete with cool blue color palette, really takes things to the next level.
6 Earthwings77
Earthwings77 totally pulls off this truly spectacular Sub-Zero cosplay; his triumphant pose looks just like the character’s, and the design is pretty cool overall. The amazing photography, done by geoda.fotografias, contributes a lot and is quite worthy of note as well.
The blood-stained costume looks amazing; clear-cut and detailed with a rugged side, which kind of encapsulates how the cosplay looks as a whole.
5 Dpnc_cosplay
Dpnc_cosplay shares this awesome Sub-Zero cosplay, incorporating both the character’s signature attitude and his well-known frosty powers. The costume is top-notch; especially with the helmet, it’s extremely detailed - to a point some might even consider obsessive, and the materials look amazing.
The poses and camera work (done by amateur photographer luganthim) are great as well, and the visual effects give the cosplayer’s chilling look a chilly look.
4 Marcopachec0
Cosplayer Marcopachec0 owns this frosty take on Sub-Zero, as he beckons towards the distance with a light snowfall around him. His costume looks amazing, a welcome, realistic blend between simple and detailed, and his shadowy glance and relaxed pose both instill exactly the kind of feeling the real Sub-Zero would.
The visual effects are amazing, especially with the battle-ax and snow, and the photography by Thiago Yamasaki is incredulously good.
3 Hoptownspidey
Hoptownspidey isn’t messing around in this vicious (not to mention viciously cool) Sub-Zero cosplay. His costume is amazing; it’s full of interesting details, from the complex design of the mask to the knives decorating his sleeves, and it compliments his stature.
The Photoshopped visual effects (done by Epic Studios) throw some action into the mix, and the photography (done by the talented Eric Manix) catches everything perfectly.
2 Demian_blz
Demian_blz makes a perfect Sub-Zero; every part of this cosplay, from his general demeanor of being in complete control to just his overall talent, qualifies him for the role. His costume looks amazing - it may be a little bit more modern than what Sub-Zero usually sports, but it still fits the character extremely well. He also appears with the equally-talented revenge.cosplay, who’s taking on the role of Scorpion - which only makes the cosplay that much better.
The photography, done by kat_photography, is superb; the lighting is especially eye-catching, with smart use of shadows.
1 Auzziejlee
Auzziejlee’s amazing Sub-Zero cosplay is one of the coolest we’ve seen thus far - and in a sea of epic, boundary-pushing cosplays, that’s saying something. Maybe it’s the determined expression and self-assured stance. Maybe it’s the photography, done by 413am, which gives everything a more natural flow.
Maybe, it’s the costume; which definitely deserves props, as it uses simple colors and an complicated design to give itself a very video-game-like feel (due credit to brokenbladeworkshop for designing the mask). Seriously, even the scar is executed pretty well.
