Gamepads saw record sales in March, and other game accessories and currency-card sales are also higher than normal across the United States. As Covid-19 concerns continue to keep people at home in an effort to maximize the effect of social distancing, it is not at all surprising to see that people are stocking up on the items they need to stay entertained in the home.
According to The NPD Group, the numbers are up by a substantial amount relative to 2019, “Total March 2020 spending on accessories and game cards reached $397 million, increasing 12% when compared to a year ago…March Accessories spending reached a record high for a March month. The previous high was set in March 2008.”
Although Sony’s PlayStation 4 is the console owned by most people, it was not their controllers that sold more than others. Instead, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller took that top spot, which means players were looking to add another player to their multiplayer games, or perhaps individual players were looking for a more comfortable way of playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons than the default Joy-Con controller, since that game has been selling extremely well since March as well.
These numbers are likely to remain consistent for the foreseeable future as social distancing measures continue to be enforced.
