Back in February of 2019, a PEGI listing leaked the existence of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster. Nothing official has been announced since then, but now the game has appeared on yet another ratings board, this time one in South Korea.

What’s interesting is that the ratings board names the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, indicating that multiplayer may not be part of the package. While the Modern Warfare 2 campaign received quite a lot of critical acclaim back at the time of its release, many would argue that the real draw of such a remaster would be reliving the game’s online multiplayer component.

However, not all hope is lost when it comes to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster having multiplayer. There appears to be some disagreement about this, but frequent Call of Duty leaker TheGamingRevolution has said that multiplayer is indeed coming, though it’s possible that it will come at some point after the campaign.

One reason why Activision may be reluctant to remaster the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer is to avoid competing with itself. After all, Call of Duty fans only have so much time in the day, and a Modern Warfare 2 remaster with multiplayer would potentially hurt the online populations of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Black Ops 4. Then again, the Call of Duty 4 remaster didn’t seem to cause any negative effect like that, so it’s hard to say if that is even a legitimate concern.

As for when a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster could release, that remains to be seen. Rumors have said that the Modern Warfare 2 remaster is coming in 2020, but others think that it will drop in 2021 instead. Regardless of when the leaked Modern Warfare 2 remaster releases, though, it’s clear that there are plenty of Call of Duty games on the way that should keep fans of the franchise plenty busy for the long-term.

We know for sure that a main series Call of Duty is coming this year, and there are rumors that Sledgehammer is making a free-to-play CoD for 2021. Even if the free-to-play Call of Duty and the Modern Warfare 2 remaster don’t materialize, though, fans will have at least one main series Call of Duty game to play each year for the foreseeable future.
