Monte Cook Games and Here Be Dragons Games have teamed up to bring the world of the Diamond Throne to the acclaimed Cypher System. Titled Monte Cook’s Diamond Throne, it will be the first officially licensed fantasy setting for the Cypher System. The Kickstarter is scheduled to launch on August 18.
The Diamond Throne official announcement was made recently by Here Be Dragons Games, who will publish the sourcebooks developed by Monte Cook Games. And, yes, the new RPG is based on Cook’s previous work Arcana Unearthed, his first full RPG campaign world published in 2003 by White Wolf Publishing. The Arcana Unearthed follow up sourcebook, Arcana Evolved, will also be a part of the Diamond Throne initial release.
The Cypher System is designed as a core set of guiding RPG principles flexible enough to handle a variety of gaming genres, including fantasy, sci-fi, superhero, horror, modern, and many others. The original Diamond Throne is a fantasy setting, but by bringing all those initial ideas and inspirations into the Cypher System, we’ll be able to use them in any setting we want, including any of the established Cypher System settings such as Numenera, Gods of the Fall, The Strange, and others.
According to the Diamond Throne announcement, the first release is set to be two volumes, one each for the updated Arcana Unearthed and Arcana Evolved. Unearthed: Corebook 1 will cover the lore of the Land and its people, and will include info for creatures, monsters, and the other threats and dangers present. Evolved: Corebook 2 will contain info for player character creation, including “Types, Adjectives and Foci; background aspects and skills and equipment.”
In case you’d like to get hold of the originals, you can find Monte Cook’s Arcana Unearthed and Monte Cook’s Arcana Evolved available by Malhavoc Press on DtiveThruRPG. Both books are written for the 3rd edition of the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game under the Open Game License. Also note that Evolved is simply the updated version of Unearthed, if you’re just looking for the most recent edition.
